Meet Ustad George Grigore, the esteemed scholar who translated the Koran from Arabic into Romanian. His translation has been internationally recognized for its authenticity and is read in mosques across the country.
George Grigore is a pioneer in Arabic literature and contemporary religious studies in Europe. Though not a Muslim, he speaks with the wisdom and peace of an Imam. A pragmatic man of wisdom, he carries an agnostic philosophy, free from fanaticism and bigotry. Living in Bucharest, he embodies the spirit of an urban Sufi, an East European Ibn ‘Arabi, through his metaphysical poetry, which has transformed into mystic songs. His has brought the colorful spring of Baghdad to Bucharest through his poetic prowess. He has translated the works of Al-Ghazali, exploring the roles of dervishes in Islamic mysticism. His contributions have earned him several awards, including the Al-Quds Prize in 2016 and recognition from the Union of Arab Writers.
Engaging in conversation with George Grigore is a deeply enriching experience. He answers questions with modesty, uncovering truths through a dialectical approach, free from bias towards Islam or the Orthodox Christianity of his upbringing. His interest spans Turkish, Iranian, and Iraqi Sufism, as well as South Asian Sufism, particularly in Bengal, where mysticism blends with non-violent Buddhism and Hindu Vaktibad. His command of Arabic, Persian, and Indian vocabulary adds a thrilling depth to his discussions.
He once advised me to popularize the term “Ustad” instead of “Guru” in Romania, arguing that “Ustad” conveys more decency and strength, free from the associations of tantric sex cults that sometimes accompany “Guru.” I agree with Dear Ustad George Grigore.
Currently, as a senior academic at the University of Bucharest, George Grigore is busy with several translations and creative writing projects. Despite recent health challenges, his dedication to completing his unfinished work remains tireless. His mission is to share the hidden treasures of knowledge and wisdom with society. His thousands of students are carrying the light of his wisdom and preaching the essence of Sufism and other forms of mysticism.
