Speech on the World Arabic Language Day and the Launch of the Book
“Correct and Incorrect Usage in the Arabic Language (Say This, Not That)”
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Peace and blessings be upon the noblest of messengers, our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and companions all together.
To begin with,
Words of Appreciation:
I would like to extend my sincere thanks and deep appreciation to MES Kalladi College, represented by the Departments of Arabic Language and Islamic History, for their kind invitation to attend this distinguished ceremony on the occasion of the World Arabic Language Day, held under the title:
“Opening Horizons of Opportunity in the Arabic Language: Professional Pathways and Literary Launch.”
This celebration also coincides with the launch of three volumes of the book “Correct and Incorrect Usage in the Arabic Language (Say This, Not That)” by Dr. Fatima Abu Wasil Ighbaria.
The Speech:
Tomorrow, the entire world celebrates World Arabic Language Day, observed annually on December 18, in recognition of the Arabic language and its global role in elevating cultural awareness within societies. This day commemorates the anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly’s decision in December 1973 to adopt Arabic as one of its official and working languages.
This occasion represents an effective platform for promoting dialogue, exchanging ideas, and fostering mutual understanding, in appreciation of the esteemed global status of the Arabic language. It brings together a wide spectrum of voices, strengthening cultural bonds and shared values, while exploring how innovation and inclusivity can shape the future of the Arabic language worldwide.
This year’s celebration revolves around the theme:
“Innovative Horizons for the Arabic Language: Policies and Practices Shaping a More Inclusive Linguistic Future.”
It highlights the role of education, media, technology, and public policy in employing Arabic in more accessible, effective, and socially responsive ways.
This year’s observance comes at a time of rapid digital transformation, showcasing initiatives that strengthen the presence of the Arabic language in educational systems, digital platforms, and public discourse—particularly within multilingual local communities striving to promote linguistic equality, preserve the vitality of Arabic, and ensure its adaptability as a language deeply rooted in a rich cultural heritage.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has made significant contributions to serving the Arabic language throughout its history, both domestically and internationally. It has established numerous colleges and institutes inside and outside the Kingdom to teach Arabic to non-native speakers, and it has supported distance-learning programs for Arabic language education, keeping pace with technological advancement and modern educational tools.
Within the framework of the care and patronage of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud—may Allah preserve him—the Saudi Council of Ministers approved the establishment of the King Salman Global Academy for Arabic Language. This initiative aims to highlight the status of Arabic, enrich Arabic digital and scholarly content across various fields, serve as a global reference for promoting and safeguarding the Arabic language, support linguistic research and specialized publications, and correct common errors in vocabulary and structure.
I would also like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Fatma Abu Wasil Igbaria on the launch of the three volumes of “Correct and Incorrect Usage in the Arabic Language (Say This, Not That).” Such an achievement comes as no surprise, as her pioneering works stand as clear testimony to her long-standing and tangible efforts in serving the Arabic language and its literature. I pray that Allah grants great benefit through this work, which represents a valuable addition to the Arabic library.
In conclusion, I would like to express my sincere thanks to all those who organized and contributed to this honorable event.
May Allah grant success.
Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you.
